German TTS audio on tts.audio runs on Microsoft MAI Voice 2, with two neural voices: Klaus (male) and Mia (female). Both produce Standard German, the High German variety used in news broadcasts, audiobooks, and corporate training across Germany, Austria, and German-speaking Switzerland. Klaus carries all eighteen MAI expressive styles, making him a strong choice for long-form narration where you want subtle emotional range. Mia fits conversational use, ads, and character dialogue. Use cases we see most often: German-language podcast drafts, e-learning localization for the DACH market, accessibility audio for German-language documentation, and pronunciation reference for language learners. For Austrian or Swiss German dialect output, MAI does not have dedicated voices, but you can prompt Gemini with dialect text and it will read it back in a close approximation. PDF upload handles umlauts (ä, ö, ü) and the Eszett (ß) without configuration.

German TTS — frequently asked questions
Reviewed by Antonio Foti, Founder. Updated July 2026.
Is the German pronunciation accurate?
Yes. Both Klaus and Mia use Microsoft MAI Voice 2 trained on Standard German. Pronunciation follows the official German orthography, including correct handling of umlauts (ä, ö, ü), the Eszett (ß), and compound words. Long compound nouns are stressed correctly because the model has seen them in training.
Does this support Austrian or Swiss German?
MAI Voice 2 only ships Standard German voices. For Austrian or Swiss dialect output, switch to the Gemini multilingual model in the voice picker and write the text in the dialect. Gemini auto-detects and approximates regional pronunciation.
Can I use German TTS audio for a commercial podcast?
Yes, on any paid plan (Pro at $0.13/day and up). The free tier is personal use only. Generated MP3s are downloadable for 24 hours via a secure link.
